In an entertaining first half, Renato Sanchez drew Portugal level when his deflected shot from outside the box flew past Lukasz Fabianski just after the half hour mark.
The second half was a bit of a stalemate, though there were chances, with Portugal in particular going close.
Fabianski was scrambling when Artur Jedrzejczyk's interception almost crept into the bottom corner, only for it to slide harmlessly past the post, before Cristiano Ronaldo missed his kick with five minutes remaining, after beating the offside trap.
But neither side could grab a winner and it's on to extra time the game went.
As can sometimes happen, tired bodies and minds made for a relatively dull half hour, but Lewandowski did manufacture a chance, flashing a dangerous ball across the box but nobody gambled.
